Pro Business Britian?

05/11/2025

Okay I'm back for real this time, promise.

Multiple political parties in the UK (pretty much all of them that aren't on the left), have made claims to the effect of being "Pro Business" (with Reform saying that outright and Labour saying the "UK is open for Business"). This is a position that seems to be fairly popular, and it's easy to see why - since 2020, countless highstreets across the UK have seen many small businesses leave due to the economic shitshow we all face.

Before I get into my main point, I'd like to tell you a story of one such highstreet - where many businesses were forced out at this time, not because of the shitshow itself - but because of decisions this system encouraged. There are countless examples of businesses simply not getting enough business to survive, but this is a little different.

Yeovil

Yeovil is a medium sized town in Somerset, on the South Eastern border with Dorest. The population is about 50K (2021 census). Like most other medium-large towns in Somerset (Bridgy, WSM), most aren't well off.
